It’s a simple question, really. What is, in your opinion, the best new car on sale today, price notwithstanding?
Me, I have to say the Mercedes S63 AMG coupe.
It’s drop-dead gorgeous, mind-bendingly fast, and just about the most luxurious thing on the road.
What’s your choice?
Discuss!

I second your nomination

My answer would be the Mazda 5.
Canadians have a few better choices: the Nissan Micra, Mercedes B-class, and Kia Rondo. Those are the three most awesome cars available in Canada that they MUST bring down here!

Volvo XC90. Eminently luxurious, fantastically safe and fairly brisk if you go for the T8 option. And those seats are so lovely to rest your ass on.

Umm... Alrighty then!

Why S63 not S65?
Personally, I’d have to go with any current Roller.
![]() 09/13/2015 at 11:15 |

I'd say it's in the top three SUVs on the market (behind the GL and Suburban). It certainly is fantastic though.

Keep in mind, this is the guy who whenever I post a picture of a Ferrari or Aston, will point out the epic Pontiac Grand Am in the background.

McLaren P1. Everything you need, nothing you don’t in a fantastic tech-sexy package.
![]() 09/13/2015 at 11:20 |

S63 is quicker.
Rollers are always fabulous, but they’re really only good in one area (luxury) whereas the Merc is nearly as luxurious and quicker to boot.

This may not be my first choice but for me it’s the Skoda Superb Combi hands down. It’s got a huge trunk, massive rear legroom, it’s relatively affordable and doesn’t look too bad. Oh and it also comes with Diesel engines.
![]() 09/13/2015 at 11:22 |

S63 is quicker off the line due to AWD. Once you get rolling, however.
As I’ve said many times on here, I want luxury with a little speed, not vice-versa. A Wraith is plenty quick enough for me.
![]() 09/13/2015 at 11:23 |

This or the Octavia vRS would probably be my pick if Škodas were sold in America and price was a factor.
![]() 09/13/2015 at 11:25 |

I’d prefer luxury with a little speed too, but with the S63 you get luxury with a lot of speed.
The Wraith is an awesome car though.

The e39 m5 of today for today with pushrods.

The P1 would be my choice if it had to be a supercar, but it’s too singular in it’s purpose. I like cars that do everything well.

The S63 is a gorgeous car but I cannot get over its rear. I just don’t like it. However I do like the rear of the new C63. Yes I know they look almost the same but when you compare them side-by-side you can see some differences.
Anyways my vote is for the CLA45. Did you know that a base CLA45 is within spitting distance of the STi Sport-Tech trim? ~$5k difference which probably gets smaller after you factor in financing rates and possible incentives.

If only VW had some serious interest in the U.S. market..

Somehow I knew someone would bring this up.
I love the SS, especially since it comes with a stick. It’s definitely one of the best all-arounders out there. Fast, practical, fairly luxurious. But can it really hold a candle to a $180,000 Mercedes? No.
However, if price was a consideration, this would definitely be up there.

An S550 sedan is fine for me.

You don’t like photobombs? :p
![]() 09/13/2015 at 11:31 |

CLA45 is great, but in that segment I’d for a M235i.
![]() 09/13/2015 at 11:31 |

Yeah... I just like cars that are utterly refined where I want a car to be refined. I’d be perfectly content with a P1 for DD and a Honda Fit converted to a 4 door ute for everything else.
![]() 09/13/2015 at 11:32 |
|
The S63 is basically an S550 cranked up to 11.
![]() 09/13/2015 at 11:32 |
|
Why not? Same aftermarket support as a Mazda 3, lots of room, and of course a manual transmission is available, unlike the S63.
Yeah I know it’s no Miata, but I’m still afraid of that Miata being too Fiatized. We’ll see how it holds up after a few years.
![]() 09/13/2015 at 11:32 |

Now I have a sudden urge to convert a Honda Fit to a four door ute.

Porsche Boxster Spyder.
![]() 09/13/2015 at 11:34 |

Good argument, but it's not really that practical. Why not just get a Golf Sportwagen? It's just as, if not more, practical, plus it also has a stick and a diesel.
![]() 09/13/2015 at 11:35 |
|
It was funny the first few times. After about the fiftieth it’s just predictable and annoying.
![]() 09/13/2015 at 11:35 |

Its what I have wanted ever since I bought a Fit in ‘08. The car wasn’t mine for long but the idea stuck.
![]() 09/13/2015 at 11:35 |

I like the way you think. If I were getting a sports car in the $50,000-100,000 range, I'd probably get a Boxster Spyder. Too bad it's limited production.
![]() 09/13/2015 at 11:36 |

Problem is, the bed wouldn't be very big.
![]() 09/13/2015 at 11:36 |

Weighs less, has better P/W ratio, comes with Brembos as an option, and it’s smaller than its outgoing predecessor in an era where safety regulations constantly bloat up cars.
![]() 09/13/2015 at 11:38 |
|
Is it even street legal though? I mean it's technically a new car but then again so is an F1 car. The regular Miata is a contender for sure though.
![]() 09/13/2015 at 11:43 |
|
I meant the ND Miata in general. :P
![]() 09/13/2015 at 11:44 |

*so close* Mercedes S65 coupe, because V-12
![]() 09/13/2015 at 11:51 |

Perfect. Love this color with the chrome front of the S65. Also S65 because of Magic Body Control. It really is magical.
![]() 09/13/2015 at 11:52 |
|
No, But I’d do it like the avalanche. Open a hatch and fold down the seats for more room.
![]() 09/13/2015 at 11:54 |
|
Although, I like the SS better than the Merc. I may be an out-there odd ball but American maintenance vs Merc? I’d rather know it wouldn’t randomly break randomly with exotic German elements that had to be ordered from Pluto’s 3rd moon...
![]() 09/13/2015 at 11:57 |
|
While I love the S63, especially in coupe form, the transmission is shit. Like Chrysler 9-speed hooked to a 4-cylinder shit. Except maybe more reliable. Mercedes just has no idea how to make a performance transmission. They could really use a few pointers from Porsche on that front. I’ll take an S65 please.
![]() 09/13/2015 at 12:02 |
|
Mercedes hydraulic suspension is the shit. Also V-12s are the best engines. And the S65s designo interior is stupid comfy.
![]() 09/13/2015 at 12:07 |
|
Has the S65 coupe been released yet? :)
It’s probably actually the S65 sedan as much as I think the coupe is better looking. Rear access is important.
![]() 09/13/2015 at 12:08 |

I see your S coupe and I almost agree with you but this exists...
Money no object? I’m rocking a Vanquish

I second that.

Volvo XC90. Looks amazing, unique, and its a VOLVO!
![]() 09/13/2015 at 12:57 |

The GLA45 AMG, because there is no reason for this insane thing to exist, but it does and if I could afford one, I would buy it over any car in that price bracket.
![]() 09/13/2015 at 13:06 |
|
Now before you give me a look like I have three heads, let me explain.
I don’t need 150-way massaging self-adjusting seats, or leather wrapped air vents, or air suspension that adjusts to the road ahead. I just want a good looking car with a healty amount of power (305 is about perfect), a well built interior with comfortable seats, a nice stereo, and some toys to play with like heated and cooled seats and a big sunroof. I don’t need a fancy badge or sports car like driving dynamics. I also don't want the cost of servicing something ridiculously expensive once the warranty runs out. The Impala pretty much covers everything I need. Plus, you know, I'll actually be able to buy one new eventually.
![]() 09/13/2015 at 13:21 |

If I assume best car on sale today, to mean best from the perspective of the whole world and all the various vehicle-related needs, I've gotta go with the Land Cruiser. If I was told I was being dropped in an undisclosed location and I had to pick a car beforehand, this is what I'd pick
![]() 09/13/2015 at 16:14 |
|
Have you driven one?
![]() 09/13/2015 at 16:42 |
|
That's actually a solid choice.
![]() 09/13/2015 at 16:43 |
|
Was waiting for this.
![]() 09/13/2015 at 16:44 |
|
I totally forgot about the Vanquish, but I think the Mercedes does everything just a little bit better (except looks).
![]() 09/13/2015 at 16:47 |
|
I'd rather the S65 as a sedan because then you'd be the true king of the road. But I don't need to be the king of the road. And the coupe looks better.
![]() 09/13/2015 at 17:14 |

Driven s63 sedan and coupe and s65 sedan. The s65 was by far my favorite.

Sorry for being so short and snippy, BTW.

it’s cool np :)

The S65 AMG, the Jaguar F-Type, the Range Rover, the Lamborghini Huracan or the 911 Targa.. It depends on what car segment you prefer..
![]() 09/13/2015 at 21:32 |
|
Which one for you?
![]() 09/13/2015 at 22:12 |
|
Tough one.. A Jaguar F-Type Coupe can be the cheapest of the bunch so I’d aim for that..
![]() 09/13/2015 at 22:24 |

I don’t like the three pointed star. And yes it can blow out a candle of a $180,000 electronic nightmare with its plentiful aftermarket of the LS engine.
![]() 09/13/2015 at 23:51 |
|
Well I almost said S65 because if money’s no object I’m getting a V12, but best new car needs to able to be put on a poster in a 12 year old boys bedroom. The Vanquish is one of the few cars on sale today that can accomplish that!
